Spangdahlem Link Tree: Makerspace Policy

  1. Makers must be affiliated with Spangdahlem Air Base and must have a library account in good standing.
  2. Makers under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a guardian or parent at all times.
  3. By using the makerspace, Makers agree to adhere to the policies and guidelines.
  4. Makers must sign in to the makerspace with a staff member prior to using the space. Reservations may be made in advance online, with staff, or over the phone.
    1. Reservations take precedence over walk-ins.
    2. Repeated failure to cancel reservations may result in a denial of future reservations.
  5. Makers must complete a short introduction to the 3D printer, laser cutter/engraver and Cricut prior to beginning any work on them. This introduction only needs to be completed once.
    1. The 3D printer, laser cutter/engraver and Cricut will be operated by library staff or under supervision of library staff.
    2. Additional privileges for usage of the equipment may be granted by library staff at their discretion if Makers are deemed to be capable of using the equipment in a manner that is safe and consistent with its intended purpose.
    3. The Maker agrees to follow the rules for each piece of equipment and may not remove any items from the makerspace.
  6. The Maker will seek assistance and/or consultation if necessary.
  7. The Library is not responsible for any manufacturing defects in the quality of workmanship or materials inherent in any of the tools or equipment.
  8. Makers must report any incident or accident that occurs in the Spangdahlem makerspace to a staff member immediately.
  9.  Most tools are only available in a limited capacity
    1. 3D prints should be complete before closing, larger prints may need to be divided across several sessions.
    2. Dividing larger prints into appropriate sections is in the responsibility of the Maker.
    3. Staff may terminate prints that exceed closing time.
  10. Tools, equipment, and items are to be returned in the same condition as they were received, barring normal wear and tear.
    1. If the Maker notices any damage or defect to equipment or tools, they will notify a member of staff prior to using the equipment.
    2. The Maker agrees to keep their workspace neat and to return all tools to their intended space after usage.
  11. The Maker agrees to replace lost or damaged items and further agrees to accept staff’s assessment of fair restitution of damage or loss in part or total.
  12. The Maker agrees to adhere to safety guidelines, including but not limited to:
    1. Check tools for damage before using.
    2. Keep hands, fingers, and hair away from blades, sources of heat, or other potentially harmful pieces of equipment.
    3. Stay clear of machines that are in use.
    4. Let hot items cool completely before handling.
    5. Dispose of materials in appropriate ways.
  13. The Maker acknowledges that the library is only able to provide consumable materials on a limited basis. The Maker agrees to avoid unnecessary waste of consumables. The Maker may supply their own consumables to meet their needs.
    1. Consumables must be safe to use with the intended equipment.
    2. Staff will assess materials supplied by Makers prior to usage and reserve the right to reject the use of materials if they do not meet equipment specifications.
  14. The Maker will NOT use their created products for commercial or business purposes or allow any third party to do so.
  15. Multiple copies are limited to three iterations of an item. This limit may be waived for squadron or official purposes, or at the discretion of staff.
  16. The library prohibits use of makerspace equipment to create material that is:
    1. Prohibited by local, state, federal, or host nation law.
    2. Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the wellbeing of others.
  17. The library is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged property the Maker may bring into the makerspace.
  18. The Maker is responsible for deleting and/or removing any files (digital & print) from the library equipment by the end of their session. The library is not responsible for equipment or files left behind by customers. Patrons must save their work on an external memory source such as a hard drive, CD, flash drive, or save it to a personal cloud storage.
  19. Food and drinks are not permitted in the immediate area of any tools or equipment.
  20. Violation of this agreement may result in a warning, revocation of makerspace and/or library privileges, or notification of the sponsor’s command.

While library staff will make every effort to oversee the use of the equipment, Spangdahlem Library is not responsible for any object created with the use of the equipment. This disclaimer includes any harm or injury incurred as a result of using any of the resources available in the makerspace.
